The news that 45-year old British actress Natasha Richardson has died from head injuries after a seemingly minor skiing accident is shockingly tragic.
Experts say this sort of head injury is uncommon but doctors are taught to be very vigilant of patients who initially seem fine, but can deteriorate quickly.
Martin Shalley, consultant in emergency medicine at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, said it is the location of the injury that can be important.

Liam Neeson’s wife, Natasha Richardson, is in critical condition following a skiing accident. According to People magazine, Richardson has been hospitalized with a head injury.
A rep for the film “Chloe,” which Neeson has been filming in Toronto, confirmed to the network that the Irish actor left the set to be with his wife.
“Liam Neeson left the Toronto set immediately to fly to Montreal upon news of his wife’s accident,” the rep said in a statement to CTV. “We do not have any details at this time but we hope for the best and our thoughts and prayers are with Natasha and Liam and their family.”
The actress was brought to two hospitals on Monday – Center Hospitalier Laurentien, near a ski area, and Hopital du Sacre-Coeur de Montreal, according to People.
