For as far fetched as RTOZ is, there is a realism to it. I also disagree with most of your criticisms, but I think that might come down to personal taste. RTOZ was my favorite movie as a child and is still one of my favorite films as an adult. If you like big budget action and fast pacing or sweeping story and all around "epic-ness" then I can see where you wouldn’t like RTOZ. Like real life, the dangers are vague and ultimately unknowable with most motives unclear, and the world simply moves forward. The slowness works to make the story feel more genuine. There is no boring and unnecessary action wedged into the film. I like that it’s quiet and slow. I personally don’t like those things so their absence is a gift in this film. It is beyond beautiful visually, and stunningly creative. RTOZ isn’t burdened by ham-fisted "epic-ness" to force the story. I like that the threats are vague and never materialize. And her obstacles are real and menacing without being absurd or melodramatic. It is also one of the only fantasy movies that has all of the lushness and depth that are usually reserved for big-budget action bores like the LOTR or the Potter films without any of the boring action sequences or overblown scope and scale. I have never heard from anyone that it’s in any way scary or traumatic, and i certainly didn’t think so as a kid. She’s not some ridiculous golden-child of brilliance and power.
