Think of it as, “The Night He Came Home, Sweet Home.”
On Monday, July 7, horror fan Kenny Caperton will close on his purchase of 5.21 acres of property, the site where the 27-year-old plans to build his first home. But when he’s done, his densely wooded land in the small town of Hillsborough, North Carolina will look a bit more like the fictitious, picturesque suburb of Haddonfield, Illinois.
Caperton is a man with a mission: to live in a replica of Michael Myers’ home from John Carpenter’s classic HALLOWEEN. What’s more, he’s about to break ground and turn his dream house, dubbed The Myers House NC, into a nightmarish reality. “I’ve been working for a long time to make building this house possible,” says Caperton. “I’m overwhelmingly excited that it’s actually happening.”
And it’s happening pretty damn fast. It was just May when Caperton and his girlfriend, Emily, identified the several acres of build site, a foreclosed property that they got in a great deal. By the beginning of June, they had blueprints in hand, drafted for a bargain-basement price by a buddy with a degree in architecture; now there’s already a contractor in place, ready to start building within weeks. The construction process should take no more than four to six months, says Caperton, meaning he and Emily should be rolling out their bloody welcome mat before the end of the year.
It’s a huge project even for Caperton, who already admits to being “kind of a crazy fan” about a lot of things—HALLOWEEN, especially. He has a boatload of movie memorabilia, a Celtic Rune Thorn tattoo on his forearm—inspired by the Shape’s ink from HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS—and used to run an on-line business (“The Magic Pumpkin”) that sold recreations of HALLOWEEN-inspired props.
But believe it or not, his idea for The Myers House NC was born out of something relatively wholesome, by horror standards. “Halloween means a great deal to me, both the movie and the season,” writes Caperton on his Myers House NC blog (see it here myershousenc.com), where he will document the build for fellow fans. “It brings back my childhood, and a time in my life when everything was fun and simple.” He first saw the film as a little kid, and says it reminds him of warm childhood memories like trick-or-treating in his neighborhood, and helping his mom and dad outfit the house with spooky decorations.
Caperton stresses that his version of the Myers house will not be an exact replica of its inspiration. The home used in the 1978 film was built at the turn of the century and lacks many modern conveniences, including a functioning kitchen (the movie used a temporary set). Caperton’s 1,900-square-foot home will also be slightly larger than the original.
But for all intents and purposes, and especially with regard to the areas of the house visible to audiences in the movie, Caperton will be living in a true recreation of Myers’ childhood slaughter grounds. He says fellow fans are welcome to come trick-or-treating.
“I love this film, I know other people love this film and I want them to experience it with me,” Caperton says. He’s already considering ways to celebrate his first Halloween in the house in 2009: “I’m thinking picnic tables and a big screening of HALLOWEEN in the front yard,” he says. The idea of setting up a bed-and-breakfast has even crossed his mind.
One thing is certain: Caperton can’t wait to settle in, and he doesn’t plan on ever moving out. “I’ll probably die in this house!” he says. Not literally, of course—though in the Myers House, you never know. —Scott Kearnan
